(512) Brewery Open House – Austin

512 is Austin’s newest local brewery. Owned by a former home brewer it has grown to be available in many local establishments. I have seen it at Opal Devine, Alamo Draft House, Dig Pub and some more downtown bars. The Wit is on the bottom of my list and I think the newly released Pecan Porter is my favorite. Located in South Austin just West of First Street and South of 290 it is undistinguishable from the road.

They have an occasional Open House where you supply the thirst and they provide the free beer. What a concept! When I showed up on November 23rd there were probably 200 – 300 people. Here is a BIG tip that I learned the hard way. First, have cash. Second buy the $5 pint glass. After you wait in line you get three tickets good for one free tasting each. Each tasting is about four ounces, unless….. you have a pint glass and now you get three sixteen ounce beers for five bucks and you get to keep the glass! I’m sure some people brought their pint glass from the last open house.

Some even make a lawn chair and pup tent event out of it. Way to go 512!
