Hell on wheels. That is what comes to mind as I watch some of the toughest women in Austin strap on roller skates and fly around a banked track in a controlled chaos. This ain’t no Disney on Ice. Here you might might draw blood, will likely get an elbow to the ribs and can count on finding yourself face to face with the track surface.
Although sometimes hosted at the Austin Convention Center, the home of the TXRD is the Palmer Event Center with space to seat a few thousand. Like just about anywhere in Austin, you will find a broad mix of fans. Live music performances fill the air prior to the bout and at halftime. There are multiple full bars to wet your whistle.
The TXRD is a skater owned organization and it is obviously in the best interests of the skaters to put on a crowd pleasing show and gain faithful fans. However, there is not a sense of a choreographed routine, even among friends there is some serious competition going on here with more than just pride on the line.
